Whimsy Blocks - Dog Applique Block – Jennifer Heynen Creative Co.

Happy March! There's a lot going on in the world with the covid19 virus. I believe the best thing we can do is stay home, wash our hands and stay as positive as possible. I hope you are staying healthy. Sewing and crafts are good for our mental health so I am hoping you are finding time to make something.

March's block is a dog block. I designed it because of my pup Ruby - She keeps me company during work. She goes with me everywhere. She is trouble and barks at everything but I love her anyway.

So let's get started on the Dog Block.

All 12 of the Whimsy Blocks are 8.5" x 8.5" with a finished size of 8" x 8". The pattern pieces are reversed and ready for tracing on to fusible backed webbing. If you want to know more about doing applique with this method, you can read this post here.

I chose to use a straight stitch and leave the edges raw for the blocks. I choose a variegated rainbow colored thread. That way I can use the thread on all 12 blocks in my quilt.

The dog block has two 1/4" buttons for eyes. If you are making a quilt, don't sew the eyes on until you have finished the entire quilt. You could also sew black fabric circles on as eyes to keep things safe for small children.

What to make with this applique? There will be 12 blocks in this series so you could make each block every month and put them together in a wall quilt. That was my first project with the 12 blocks. This block is also the perfect size for a mini quilt or a mug rug. You could put it on a pillow or a t-shirt. The possibilities are endless.
